Whether your family is in its first year or its fifth year at Axson, confusion abounds when it comes to sorting out the roles of PTA and FAME in our school. We hope to make it a LOT clearer with this brief overview.
PTA and FAME (Friends of Axson Montessori Elementary) are required by law to be separate organizations. The school district is perennially short on cash -- so PTA and FAME were established to help supplement the school's budget and make up shortfalls, particularly when it comes to supplemental learning materials and keeping Paraprofessionals (teacher's assistants) in every classroom.
PTA raises money for things that benefit the entire school, but it is barred from fundraising to cover personnel costs -- that's where FAME comes in. FAME may only fundraise for the purpose of paying salaries - making sure there is a Para in every classroom is its entire mission.
PTA and FAME do not compete. After all, that's not the Montessori way! Many PTA members volunteer with FAME, and vice versa. Both organizations host various fundraisers throughout the year, which is why your child's weekly folder often includes flyers announcing upcoming events or order forms for Jeans Day, Pencil-grams, etc.
To learn more about FAME, attend their next meeting on Tuesday, October 6, at 8:45am in the conference room in the front office. All are welcome!
PTA is having a general meeting at 1:45pm on Friday, September 18, and the PTA Board meets two Tuesdays each month at 1:45. The Board meetings are open to anyone who wishes to attend, and the next one is Tuesday, September 29 at 1:45 in the conference room in the front office.
PTA is working on holding regularly scheduled general meetings in the evenings for those who can't attend meetings in the middle of the day. Stay tuned for an announcement soon!
